Silence & Solitude

Learning how to be alone with God

What’s the greatest threat to your spiritual maturity?

  • Is it the messed up family you come from?

  • Is it the stubborn/messy roommate you have?

  • Is it the addiction that you cannot find freedom from?

All of those are very real and very serious threats to your spiritual maturity. But let me argue for a moment about the danger that your phone presents.

Look at this quote from Pastor John Ortberg.

“For many of us the great danger is not that we will renounce our faith. It is that we will become so distracted and rushed and preoccupied that we will settle for a mediocre version of it. We will just skim our lives instead of actually living them.”

On the last episode we spent all of our time looking at 2 Peter chapter 1. Let’s look at them one more time.

3 His divine power has given us everything required for life and godliness through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 By these he has given us very great and precious promises, so that through them you may share in the divine nature, escaping the corruption that is in the world because of evil desire.

Is that the faith that you are currently experiencing? Do you feel like you have EVERYTHING required for life and godliness right now? Do you feel like you are currently sharing in the divine nature?

Peter is clear.

ANYBODY who has put their faith in Jesus Christ…

ANYBODY who has received the Holy Spirit…

ANYBODY who has been adopted into the family of God has access to this kind of life. But more often than not, it’s not the life we are experiencing. Peter is abundantly clear and says, “It’s not because of God!”

I believe John Ortberg would say that it’s because of us. It’s because we are “so distracted and rushed and preoccupied that we are settling for a mediocre version of faith.”

But listen to me… You don’t have to. You can experience the power that comes with walking closely with God. That’s what I want for you. That’s what I want for myself. And that’s why we are talking about spiritual disciplines.

So today we are going to focus on the discipline of silence and solitude.
